The Bokashi Bucket reduces the need for an outside compost pile and is easier to maintain than a worm farm, making it ideal for people in apartments or smaller homes. The airtight lid ensures an ideal environment for anaerobic fermentation to take place, while controlling odours and deterring flies and other pests.
Unlike composting and worm farming, there is no food waste you cannot put in the bokashi system, which treats paper, citrus, onions, dairy, even meat! Simply collect your food scraps as normal and once a day add to the bokashi bucket, mash it down to remove air and liquid and then sprinkle a fine layer of Bokashi mix over the top, then reseal.
Kitchen waste ferments in the Bokashi Bucket, breakdown of waste will occur once it has been buried under the soil. How long it takes to break down depends on a few factors such as ambient temperature, it can be as short as a few days in Summer or a couple of months in Winter. Bokashi compost supplies nutrients and adds life (microbes) to the soil, improving the texture and water-holding capabilities and making your plants super-happy. You can either bury your Bokashi waste right where you need it or dig it up once it's broken down and spread it around the garden. Bokashi waste can also be added to compost bins to help turbo-charge the breakdown of garden waste. Bokashi juice can be drained off and used in many ways. The juice is alive with micro-organisms, when diluted with water it makes a terrific natural fertiliser. It can also be used as a natural drain cleaner.
The Bokashi Bucket measures 410mm high, 310mm wide, 300mm deep and is 20 litres in volume. The bucket comes with an airtight lid to provide the idea conditions for fermentation. The bucket has a grate inside which separates the soiled bokashi waste from the bokashi juice, this juice can be easily drained through the tap at the base of the bucket.
How does it work?
Put simply, food waste is layered with Bokashi One™ Mix in a Bokashi One™ Bucket. Due to the air-tight bucket and the micro-organisms present in the Bokashi One™ Mix, the waste ferments. It does not decompose inside the bucket, it reduces in volume as the water content of the waste drains through the grate at the bottom of the bucket.
The wonderful Bokashi juice produced is alive with micro-organisms and can be used in the garden and around the home. When the bucket is full, the waste is transferred outside and buried beneath the soil to complete the composting process. Breakdown is rapid thanks to the micro-organisms present in the Bokashi One™ Mix. Bokashi compost supplies soil with nutrients from the waste and more life in the form of the micro-organisms. The Bokashi One™ system significantly accelerates the composting process.
One or Two Buckets?
You may prefer to set up your system using two buckets. One of the benefits of having two buckets is the convenience, with only one bucket when it is full the waste needs to be buried to continue to use the system, with a second bucket the waste can be buried at a more convient time before you fill up your second bucket. Also by rotating the bucket the waste has more time to ferment (especially good for homes that produce a lot of waste), the longer the waste ferments the quicker it will breakdown in the soil and additionally more wonderful bokashi juice is produced.
